Present meets future: Current Gilas players welcome new, younger pool members

Familiar faces and new names emerged as Gilas Pilipinas held is first practice of the year on Monday, January 8 at the Meralco Gym.

Kiefer Ravena, Troy Rosario, Allein Maliksi, Carl Bryan Cruz, and Roger Pogoy and the rest of lineup for the upcoming second window of the 2019 FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers were in their usual Gilas practice jerseys.

Mac Belo, Kevin Alas, Jio Jalalon, Japeth Aguilar, Gabe Norwood, Jayson Castro, and Matthew Wright were also in attendance but were in street clothes.

Aside from the seasoned Gilas players, there were also young players who were eager to show their mettle. Chosen last Friday, the “23 for 2023” cadets also made their way to their first ever national team training.

Among those in attendance were collegiate standouts Isaac Go, Thirdy Ravena, Kemark Carino, Paul Desiderio, J-jay Alejandro, Javee Mocon, Robert Bolick, Juan Gomez De Liano, Joshua Sinclair, Will Gozum, CJ Perez, Arvin Tolentino, and Jeo Ambohot.

Absent from Monday’s practice were June Mar Fajardo, Calvin Abueva, and Raymond Almazan.

SBP Charmain Manny V Pangilinan also made an appearance at the Meralco Gym as well as SBP President Al Panlilio, SBP Executive Director Sonny Barrios, Senator Sonny Angara and former congressman Robbie Puno.
