We’re finally on the last Regional Qualifier for the Overwatch World Cup 2017! Happening this weekend at Los Angeles, California, the fourth World Cup qualifier features eight teams fighting it out to grab the final two spots for the Finals stage.
Day 1 for the Los Angeles Qualifier has ended; teams USA, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom had excellent showings after defeating their opponents 4-0 in their respective series.
Here are the standings for Group G at the end of Day 1:
Day 1 was opened by USA vs. New Zealand; as USA consisted of Cloud9, FaZe Clan, and players from other established teams, the home crowd expected a great performance form them. Team USA did not disappoint, as they dominated New Zealand 4-0, limiting the NZ team to only a single point across all four games.
The second series between Taiwan and Brazil started off fairly close, as Taiwan only managed to win at the fourth round on King’s Row, with a 5-3 final score. Though the next three games were stomps in favor of the Taiwanese squad. Taiwan ended the series with a 4-0 score.
Here are the standings for Group H at the end of Day 1:
The third match of the day was between the UK and Belgium. Like the Taiwan vs. Brazil series, UK vs. Belgium started off fairly close, though UK did win the first game on 3-2 Numbani. What followed was domination by the British squad, as they defeated the Belgians handily in the next three games, winning the series 4-0.
At this point, the LA Qualifier looked to be a repeat of Katowice, with sweeps all around. But Germany vs. Israel was a thriller of a series. The teams traded wins, with Germany taking Game 1 while Israel won Game 2. The third game on Horizon was a tightly contested one, and it ended in a 3-3 draw. Because of the draw, the teams were awarded a point each.
The last game Route 66 was a critical one, as both teams were tied 2-2 thanks to their draw in Game 3. Though Game 4 was not as close, as Germany took control of the game. Germany won Game 4 and took the series 3-2.
