The Rain or Shine Elasto Painters and Phoenix Fuel Masters emerged victorious in Day 2 of the pocket tournament held at The Upper Deck.
In the first game, Phoenix bounced back from their opening day loss to ROS as they staved off a late challenge from the Aces in the fourth quarter to win, 89-85.
Comfortably up by 10 points with only 46 seconds left after a couple of free throws from Matthew Wright, Alaska lit it up from distance that gave them a shot at a comeback win.
First Jeron Teng nailed a three-point shot and, after forcing a turnover from William Wilson, Abel Galliguez inched them to within four points, 86-82, with 22 seconds left. LA Revilla responded with a split from the line for Phoenix but Galliguez nailed another triple to get them within two points of the Fuel Masters.
However, Wright sealed the win for Phoenix by making two free throws as the Aces ran out of time.
After not playing in the first game, Wright led Phoenix with 17 points while Justin Chua and Joseph Eriobu combined for 21 points and 16 rebounds.
Calvin Abueva once again powered the Aces with a double-double as he finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
In the second game, the Elasto Painters beat the NLEX Road Warriors, 96-89.
Rain or Shine turned things around in the third quarter as they exploded for 38 points anchored on five triples in the period. ROS turned a 51-40 halftime deficit into a 78-70 lead heading into the final period.
Don Trollano led ROS with 20 points while Maverick Ahanmisi added 16. The NLEX bigs once again played solid minutes for coach Yeng Guiao as Rabeh Al-Hussaini and Asi Taulava combined for 28 points. Former Ateneo Blue Eagles Kiefer Ravena and Juami Tiongson combined for 26.
The last two games of the tournament will be played Wednesday with Alaska taking on ROS and NLEX facing off against Phoenix.
